Nodularia spumigena have aerotopes (groups of gas vesicles); they are one of four planktonic species that do. Species in this group may form dense blooms in the ocean or river estuaries, brackish coastal lakes and lagoons, and high-salinity inland lakes and reservoirs. Nodularia spumigena is a filamentous diazotrophic cyanobacterium that dominates the annual late summer cyanobacteria! blooms in the Baltic Sea. But N. spumigena also is common in brackish water bodies worldwide, suggesting special adaptation allowing it to thrive at moderate salinities.
